Lagrange{galerkin Approximation for Advection{dominated Contaminant Transport with Nonlinear Equilibrium or Non{equilibrium Adsorption

چکیده
An extension of the Lagrange{Galerkin approach is developed for advection-dominated problems with nonlinear adsorption, either being in equilibrium or in non{equilibrium, possibly with isotherms of the Freundlich type. The scheme should be feasable also for the hyperbolic limit case. The basic problems to deal with are the possibility of non{unique characteristics due to the nonlinear isotherms and the incorporation of the time{dependent non{ equilibrium adsorption kinetics, avoiding a strong restriction on the CFL{number. The one{dimensional scheme derived is able to handle shock solutions. In the non{equilibrium case a more severe restriction on the timestep has to be regarded.

LAGRANGE{GALERKIN APPROXIMATION FOR ADVECTION{ DOMINATED NONLINEAR CONTAMINANT TRANSPORT IN POROUS MEDIA supported by British-German ARC Grant
We describe an extension of the Lagrange{Galerkin approach for advection problems with nonlinear (non{)equlibrium adsorption, possibly with isotherms of the Freundlich type. Numerical examples indicate that this method allows for large time steps and still gives nearly exact approximations of shocks and sharp fronts.

We develop a discontinuous ®nite element method for advection±diusion equations arising in contaminant transport problems, based on the Local Discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method of Cockburn B and Shu CW. (The local discontinuous Garlerkin method for time-dependent convection±diusion systems. SIAM J Numer Anal 1998;35:2440±63). This method is de®ned locally over each element, thus allowing for...
متن کاملSolution of Inverse Problems in Contaminant Transport with Adsorption
Abstract. In this paper, solution of inverse contaminant transport problems is studied, including nonlinear sorption in equilibrium and non-equilibrium mode. A precise numerical solver for the direct problem is discussed. The method is based on time stepping and operator splitting with respect to the nonlinear transport, diffusion and adsorption. The nonlinear transport problem corresponds to a...

In this paper, a modeling tool for risk assessment analysis of the movement of hydrocarbon contaminants in the vadose zone and mass flux of contamination release into the groundwater table was developed. متن کاملExact analytical solutions for contaminant transport in rivers 1. The equilibrium advection-dispersion equation
Analytical solutions of the advection-dispersion equation and related models are indispensable for predicting or analyzing contaminant transport processes in streams and rivers, as well as in other surface water bodies. Many useful analytical solutions originated in disciplines other than surface-water hydrology, are scattered across the literature, and not always well known. In this two-part s...
